From Remscheid to the global heating map

The story of Vaillant begins in 1874, when Johann Vaillant founded a small workshop in Remscheid, in western Germany. A few years later, he patented the first “closed-type” gas water heater, an innovation that laid the foundations for modern domestic hot water and heating systems.

Throughout the 20th century, the company steadily expanded its portfolio. It developed central heating systems and wall-hung boilers, later moving into condensing technology and progressively adding solutions based on renewable energy, such as heat pumps and solar thermal collectors.

Today, the Vaillant Group remains a family-owned business and employs around 16,000 people, active in heating, cooling and hot water in more than 60 countries. Its distinctive logo – the hare in the egg – has accompanied the brand for over a century, building recognition across Europe.

A complete range – from gas boilers to smart thermostats

Over time, Vaillant has evolved into a full-range HVAC supplier, covering a wide spectrum of needs in residential and light commercial applications. At the heart of its product range are condensing gas boilers – such as the ecoTEC series – which have contributed to the shift from older oil-fired systems to more efficient natural gas solutions, both in single-family homes and in apartment buildings.

Alongside these, you will find solar thermal systems for domestic hot water production and space-heating support, storage tanks and dedicated DHW (domestic hot water) units, as well as a line-up of smart thermostats and controllers – including the modern sensoCOMFORT range and remote-control platforms accessible via smartphone apps.

The goal is for the home to operate as a single “energy ecosystem”, where boilers, heat pumps, solar systems and automation work together – reducing energy consumption and costs – instead of operating as separate, less efficient components.

In Greece, the name Vaillant is closely tied to Thermogaz S.A., which has been the companyΆs official representative for Greece and Cyprus since 1975.

Vaillant heat pumps and its best-selling models

In recent years, the hottest chapter in the Vaillant story has been its heat pumps. European policy on emissions reduction and subsidy schemes has pushed technologies like air-to-water heat pumps and ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps to the foreground – areas where the company has invested heavily.

In air-to-water heat pumps, the Vaillant aroTHERM plus series stands out as one of the most characteristic – and commercially successful – examples. It uses the natural refrigerant R290, delivers flow temperatures of up to around 75°C and offers energy efficiency classes up to A+++, while operating in both heating and cooling modes. In the field of geothermal heat pumps, flexoTHERM exclusive stands out as a flexible solution capable of extracting energy from the ground, groundwater or even air, depending on the project design. This range targets mainly homes and buildings that can take advantage of boreholes or horizontal ground loops, offering stable performance throughout the year.

For domestic hot water, aroSTOR operates as a compact DHW heat pump with an integrated storage tank, designed to replace conventional electric water heaters while consuming far less electricity. Its ability to work in combination with photovoltaic systems and its low sound levels make it an attractive option for households that want to cut their electricity bills without completely changing their existing heating system.

Sustainability, natural refrigerants and smart control

In recent years, VaillantΆs strategy has been strongly focused on sustainability. The group has brought its related initiatives together in the SEEDS programme (Sustainability in Environment, Employees, Development & Solutions, Society), setting a target to reduce its own CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030. The plan includes improving energy efficiency at production sites and offices, transitioning to a “green” vehicle fleet and using 100% renewable electricity for its operations.

At product level, the use of natural refrigerants such as R290, the development of devices with high seasonal efficiency, and the recyclability of a large proportion of components are all aligned with this philosophy.

At the same time, smart control systems and digital services enable remote diagnostics, preventive maintenance and optimised operation, giving both the end user and the installer a clearer picture of how the system actually behaves in real conditions.
